Benjamin Powell was born in Brown county, Pennsylvania, on August 31, 1796, and was of Welsh descent. He was a farmer, and one of the worthy pioneers of Madison county. His wife, Elizabeth (Conger) Powell was born in Essex county, New York, on July 23, 1801.

In the fall of 1852 they left Indiana and came west to Oquawka, Illinois; in January 1853 they removed to Van Buren county, Iowa, and in the spring of 1854 came to Madison county, where he bought and entered 1200 acres of land. Here he successfully engaged in farming until his death, which occurred in 1868. His wife survived him some years and passed away in 1889. They had a family of twelve children, six of whom died in Indiana. Those who came to Iowa were: David C., a farmer now of Nebraska; Elihu, married Rebecca (Abrams) and is now retired; Sarah J., deceased wife of Joseph Abrams; Nancy M., married to John Brown; and Ruel B., who married Talitha Jane (Goff) and is a farmer of Madison county, Iowa.
