John J. Porter

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa--John Jacob Porter, 81, of Rock Rapids died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at Merrill Pioneer Communtiy Hospital in Rock Rapids.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Congregational United Church in Christ in Rock Rapids, with the Rev. Jerry Robertson officiating. Burial will be in River View Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, with the family present 3 to 4 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley, Iowa.

Mr. Porter was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Oyens, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Dora (Heemstra) Porter. He moved with his family to a farm near Inwood, Iowa in February 1931. He graduated from Inwood High School in 1935. While in high school, he worked part-time at Inwood Bank.

He married Mavis Aanenson, of Luverne, Minn., on April 23, 1939, in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived in Rock Rapids, where he worked at Rock Rapids State Bank from 1935 to 1939. They moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he was an Iowa State Bank examiner from 1939 until returning to Rock Rapids in December 1945. He then opened and managed the Lyon County State Bank, now known as Mercantile Bank. In 1976, he owned and operated Porter Title Co., until retiring in 1991.

He was a past president of Rock Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Rock Rapids Development Corporation. He was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ, Border Masonic Lodge 406 and El Riad Shrine of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Steve and Ieva of Minneapolis, Minn.; a daughter and her husband, Julie and Al Holland of San Jose, Calif.; three sisters, Rose Duven of Pella, Iowa, Dorothy Moen of Inwood and Alice and her husband, Don Clark, of Alma, Kan.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, Alvin, and Adrian; two brothers-in-law, Wilson Duven and Herman Moen; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Porter.
