Oct. 19, 1954A. R. (Alfred Reginald) Thompson, Former City Auditor, Dies Monday Night, 10/18/1954.
He was for many years city auditor of Jamestown and died at Trinity Hospital Monday night. Mr. Thompson was a lifelong churchman of English parentage. He was born in Duluth, Minnesota, May 31, 1875, and confirmed in St. Paul's Episcopal Church of that city. In 1907 Mr. Thompson came to Jamestown and has been an active leader in Grace Episcopal Church and Jamestown Community for nearly a half century. Among his many activities in the church, he recalled with pleasure his many years as superintendent of the Sunday School. He severed under five clergymen as senior warden. He was also treasurer for many years.
He retired from active life in 1952 after being city auditor under the terms of five mayors serving the community in a long and faithful service. Aside from being city auditor for 25 years, Mr. Thompson was in the grain business, five years on the Board of Trade in Duluth, MN; four years auditor for a line of elevators out of Sioux Falls, Iowa, and 17 years manager of the Star Elevator Company. Despite a busy life, he always found time for his fellow men to work and to enjoy them.
Mr. Thompson was the father of three sons, George M. Thompson, Bismark, ND and Clifford Alfred, by a previous marriage; Clifford having died in infancy, and Mrs. Lottie Thompson, his first wife, died May 3, 1905, at Willow City, ND. Mr. Thompson and Miss. Elsie Bowers were married December 26, 1905, at Doon, IA and to this union one son Reginald, now deceased was born. He preceded his father in death September 21, 1953. Survived by three brothers (only name listed was Walter) and a sister, Mrs. Florence Reed, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was buried in Highland Home Cemetery & funeral was Oct. 24, 1954. The city offices were closed this morning and the flag at the city hall was flown at half-mast in respect to Mr. Thompson. Mrs. Alice White [a sister of Elsie], Washington, D. C. Was in attendance.
