March 7, 1855 ---- March 13, 1930

Michael Hughes, a well known pioneer of northwest Iowa, died at the McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Thursday, March 13th, where he had been taken three weeks previous. Mr. Hughes had been in poor health since last fail, but his condition was not considered serious until a few weeks ago.

The deceased was born in La Salle, Illinois, March 7, 1855 and at the age of two years, moved with his parents to Clinton county, Iowa near De Witt, which was later known as the Hughes settlement. Here he grew to manhood, and on November 27, 1879, he was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss Ellen Mullen of Lyon, Iowa, where they resided for 10 years. In the spring of 1893, they moved to a farm northwest of Larchwood, where they made their home until 1918, when they left the farm, and moved to town.

To this union, five children were born, four of whom are living, Richard, preceded his father in death one week. The others are Mrs. Harvey Perkinson, Mrs. Nellie Lynch, Thomas Hughes, of this place and Will, of Howard, S.D. and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Hughes were held Monday morning, March 17, 1930 at St. Mary's Catholic church, Rev. Father Janse officiating with a Requiem high mass. Funeral sermon was given by Rev. Father Cooke, of Marcus, Iowa, formerly pastor of this place.

Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hughes and sons, Michael and John; Thomas, James, Will and T. G. Hughes of Lost Nation; John O'Brien, of Delmar, Iowa, Mrs. Will Kenney and son, Richard; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kramer of Marcus, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Hughes and sons, Donald, Richard of Remsen, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Michael Kennedy and Mr. and Mrs. James Arends, of Remsen; Mr. and Mrs. Arden McGee, of Harrisburg, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Kinney and sons, Bert, Walter and Raymond, of Garretson, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kinney and children, of Sioux Falls, S. D. and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kinney and children of Garretson, S.D.
