Inwood, Iowa -- Clarene Joyce Burgers, 80, of Inwood, died on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Inwood Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Sam Krikke officiating. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery of Inwood. Visitation with the family present will be Monday, August 1, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home of Inwood.

Clarene Joyce Burgers was born January 6, 1936 in Ruthton, Minnesota, the daughter of Joe and Anna (Osenga) Vander Plaats. In 1940 the family moved to a farm northwest of Holland, Minnesota where she attended country school for four years and then attended school at Verdi, Minnesota until graduating from high school. Clarene worked as an optometric assistant for Dr. RJ Pandiscio in Pipestone Minnesota until her marriage to Jacob Burgers on June 17, 1972 in Holland, Minnesota. They moved to Inwood, Iowa in 1979. Jacob died on July 19, 2008.

Clarene was employed as a bookkeeper at Moen’s Farm Store in Inwood and later at the city library. Clarene loved when she could spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed flower gardening and loved to read. Clarene was a member of Inwood Christian Reformed Church and the Willing Workers Society.

Clarene is survived by her step sons and their wives, Dick and Muriel of Milaca, Minnesota, and Jack and Dena of Hinton, Iowa; step daughter-in-law, Bonnie; 12 step-grandchildren; and 8 step great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Tracy De Kam of Ruthton, Minnesota, Betty De Vries of De Motte, Indiana, and Joanne Fischer of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota.

Clarene was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Anna; husband, Jake; step son, John; brothers, Andrew Vander Plaats and Perry Vander Plaats; sister, Nettie Fieldhouse; and infant sister, Joyce.
