Peter "Pete" Cuperus

November 19, 1939 - January 20, 2016

George, Iowa -- Peter “Pete” Cuperus, age 76, of George, died on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.

Memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 23rd at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, in George, Iowa, with Reverend Dale Lint officiating. Burial will take place this spring private with family at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Jurrens Funeral Home of George is in charge of services.

Peter Cuperus was born on November 19, 1939 in rural Hull, Iowa, the son of Peter and Nellie (Langstraat) Cuperus. Pete grew up in Hull, and attended Hull Western Christian and later graduated in 1957. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was later medically discharged.

On December 19, 1960, Pete was united in marriage to Carolee Starr. After their marriage they lived in Hull, Iowa, for three years and then moved to George, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Steve, Scott and Shellee. Pete worked various jobs throughout his life. While he and Carolee lived in Hull he worked for the Chevy garage. He then worked for Don Fie Plumbing & Heating, ten years with Sudenga Industries and retired from Demco Manufacturing after twenty-six years.

Pete loved to watch Sprint Car and NASCAR racing, but he especially enjoyed the Sprint Car racing. He would try and make it down to the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma, every year. He also liked gardening and feeding and watching the birds. Pete liked to keep busy so he spent much of his time working on his house and helping others. He will be greatly missed.

Pete is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Carolee Cuperus of George, Iowa; three children: Steve (Melanie) Cuperus of George, Iowa, Scott Cuperus of George, Iowa, and Shellee (Howie) Maxwell of Glenwood, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Evan Cuperus, Ashley (Jeremy) Boone, Amy DeGroot, Alyssa DeGroot, Brian (Caitlin) Cuperus, Kayla Cuperus (special friend Jarrett Klinger), Tyler (special friend Olivia Hudson), Brett and Tara Maxwell; three great-grandchildren: Brooklynn Dailey, Hailee and Abby Boone; two sisters: Ruth Anderson of Hull, Iowa, Nelvina (Larry) Matthews of Idaho and sister-in-law Dena Cuperus; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Elmer and Calvin Cuperus; and one sister, Ellen Smit.
