Leo "Pat" Carolan

August 13, 1942 - November 14, 2015

Leo “Pat” Carolan, age 73 of Lester, Iowa, died Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Private family memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, Iowa, with Rev. Don Nelson officiating. Inurnment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Lester, Iowa.

Leo “Pat” Carolan Jr. was born August 13, 1942, in Kansas City, MO to Leo and Teresa (Phelan) Carolan Sr. He graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. At 17 years old he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California, the Philippines, and Japan during his military career.

Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Sioux Falls, and went to work for Equitable Life Assurance. He then worked for BNSF Railroad as a foreman for many years. Pat was an athlete in his younger years and enjoyed all sports. He played basketball for the United States Marine Corp and was a Commissioned Scout for the St. Louis Cardinals for many years. Pat was often the all time quarterback/referee or pitcher/umpire for football/whiffle ball games in the backyard. He enjoyed following the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by Sharon, his wife of 49 years; their seven children: Shawn (Julie) Carolan of Lester, Iowa, Beth (Bob) McSpadden of Parker, Colorado, Michael (Lesley) Carolan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mark (Veronica) Carolan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Chad Carolan of Lester, Iowa, Jamie (Sherry) Carolan of Inwood, Iowa, and Sara (Gary) Rovarino of Valencia, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; sister, Mary Louise Carolan of St. Louis, Missouri; brother, Joe (Linda) Carolan of St. Louis, Missouri; brother, Dennis (Mary) Carolan of Cheverly, Missouri; and sister, Denise (Nick) Zerillo of St. Louis, Missouri.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Teresa.
