May 20, 1944 - August 22, 2015

Inwood, Iowa -- Una Kay Kooistra, 71, of Rock Valley, Iowa passed away Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Fellowship Village in Inwood. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa, with Pastor Mike Molenaar officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Visitation, with family present, will be Tuesday, August 25, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com .

Una Kay Shefstad was born on May 20, 1944, in Cherokee, Iowa. Her parents were Wilbur and Dora (Hahn) Shefstad of Marcus, Iowa. She was raised in rural Marcus where farming and working along side her mother in the kitchen and in the garden was her joy. Her family permanently moved to Marcus in 1959.

While working in Orange City, Iowa, she met Orville Kooistra. The Couple married on March 23, 1964 at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. The couple raised their family in Rock Valley, Iowa. Kay stayed at home while her two daughters were in school.

Kay loved spending time with and spoiling her three grandsons. She also loved sports, especially baseball and she was a loyal Minnesota Twins fan. She enjoyed motorcycle riding with her husband and cooking, canning, baking, gardening, and cross stitching. Kay had a gift for talking and meeting people and she used that gift while volunteering as a Foster Grandparent. Kay was a kind, generous spirit, and always told whoever she met, “Have a good day.” She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church and later Faith Reformed Church.

She will be lovingly remembered by her family including her husband, Orville of Rock Valley; two daughters, Tami Elbers and her husband, Mike of Rock Valley, Iowa and Lynn Lutz and her husband, Michael of Kansas City; brother, Berdene Shefstad and his wife, Linda of Holdrege, Neb.; four grandsons, Ryan Elbers (wife, Josie), Matt Elbers (wife, Jackie), Nate Elbers (wife, Paige) of Rock Valley and Nathan Lutz of Kansas City; one granddaughter, Abigail Lutz of Fort Collins, Colorado; three great grandchildren, Alejandra, Brandon, and Dempsey Elbers.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents.
