Doon, Iowa - John A. Buss, age 73, of Doon, died Friday, May 22, 2015 following a brief illness, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 27th at First United Methodist Church in Doon, Iowa, with Rev. Steve Swenson officiating.

Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Doon.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 26th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

John Albert Buss was born May 7, 1942 at Belle Flower, California, the son of Albert and Bernice (Lamfers) Buss. In 1946 his family moved to Ashton, Iowa, where he was raised and attended Ashton Community Schools. He graduated from Ashton High School in 1960.

John was united in marriage to Glenda Gay Hansmann on August 13, 1960 at the Presbyterian Church in Ashton. They started out living in Sheldon, Iowa, while John drove over the road truck, then moved to Le Mars, Iowa, and he continued to drive truck.

In 1966 they moved to Rochester, New York, where John worked construction and later worked at Eastman Kodak. He was transferred by Kodak to Greeley, Colorado, and lived there for a short while. They moved to Doon, Iowa, in 1971, where he again worked construction and also drove truck.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Doon. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and playing cards, especially pinochle. He also enjoyed visiting with friends, every day, and playing cards at the Community Center with seniors.

On January 14, 2009 John’s wife, Glenda died after 48 years of marriage. John continued living in Doon. He died this past Friday, May 22, 2015 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 73.

He is survived by three children: Sheila (husband Jeff) Meyer of Sioux Center, Iowa, Eddie Buss of Doon, Iowa, and Mike Buss (girlfriend Sheila Van Houten) of Alvord, Iowa; five grandchildren: Justin (wife Erin) Buss, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Nick (wife, Katrina) Buss, of Garretson, South Dakota, Kristin Meyer, of Des Moines, Iowa, Tyler Meyer, of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Mason Buss, of Alvord, Iowa; five great-grandchildren: Cadence, Paige, Josephine, Ricky John “RJ” and Chassidy; one sister, Bev Heideman of Sibley, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Lester Buysman of Heron Lake, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Donna Hansmann of Churchville, New York; one aunt, Louise Hansmann of Harris, Iowa; one uncle, Frederick “Fritz” (wife Ruth) Hansmann of Lake Park, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Bernice Buss; wife, Glenda Buss; a son, Rick Buss; two sisters, Joan Buysman and Eilene Buss; a brother, Dick Buss; six brothers-in-law, Jake Funk, Arthur Hansmann, Delbert Hansmann, Waldo Hansmann, John Hansmann and Robert Haviland; three sisters-in-law, Genevive Haviland, Dallis Deutch and Lisa Buss.
