Eunice (Zaback) Hill January 16, 1919 – October 22, 2003

EUNICE HILL 84 ROCK RAPIDS, IOWA OCTOBER 22, 2003

Eunice “Ede” Hill, 84, of Rock Rapids died Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at Rock Rapids Health Centre.

Funeral mass was Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in the church cemetery.

Eunice Zaback was born January 16, 1919, at Minot, North Dakota, the daughter of Leo and Isobel (DeGreef) Zaback. After her mother’s death 10 days later, she grew up with her aunt and husband. She graduated from Howard South Dakota Public School, attended Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell, South Dakota, and received her R.N. and Bachelor of Science degree in nursing education from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1941. She served as a non-commissioned officer in the Minnesota State Guard Nurse Corps and the city hospital in South San Francisco several years before returning to South Dakota.

On April 17, 1948, she married Robert Hill in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They lived in Rock Rapids.

At Holy Name Catholic Church, she was active in St. Catherine’s Society, member and regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and church representative on the Rock Rapids Council of Churches. She was a member and president of VFW Auxiliary #6960, charter member of Women in Military Service of America Memorial Foundation and member of Lyon County and Grant County South Dakota historical societies and St. Scholastica Alumni Association.

Survivors include five sons, Peter, Joseph, Mark, Frank and David, all of Rock Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Mary) Duitsman of Estherville and Mrs. Don (Martha) Hill-Fajardo of Bellevue, Nebraska; 22 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. James Nelson of Bakersfield, California; one half-brother and three half-sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one prematurely born child, Marion, and one sister, June Sather.
