Biography

Rock Rapids, Iowa - Tillie Ver Steeg, age 102, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Sanford Hospital Rock Rapids.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 19, 2014 at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids with Reverend Dan Haggar officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 18th from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM with family present from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Tillie Ver Steeg was born on June 25, 1912 in Middleberg, Iowa, the daughter of Egbert and Hattie (Bronkhorst) Kragt. She grew up around Hull, Iowa, and attended country school and Hull public school.

On January 31, 1934, she was united in marriage to Ronald Ver Steeg. After their marriage they lived in Clarion, Iowa for two years and then moved to a farm near Hull. In 1940, they move to a farm south of Rock Rapids. After retiring in 1974, they moved to Rock Rapids.

In 1931, she made profession of faith and she was a member of the Reformed church all of her life. Since 1941, she has attended Rock Rapids First Reformed Church, where she was active in the Dorcas Circle and key lady in the World Home Bible League.

Tillie volunteered at the nursing homes in Rock Rapids and was active with Dinner Date and Golden Age Club. She enjoyed making quilts and afghans and made one for each of her grandchildren.

Tillie is survived by five children: Bernard (Theressa) Ver Steeg of Sioux Center, Iowa, Ken (Dee) Ver Steeg of Springdale, Arkansas, Gene (Bev) Ver Steeg of Inwood, Iowa, Gen Van Veldhuizen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Galen (Jane) Ver Steeg of Sioux Center, Iowa; son-in-law, Harley (Elsie) Mulder of Highlands Ranch, CO; fifteen grandchildren and thirty-six great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Ver Steeg and Burdella De Jager; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Ver Steeg on December 30, 1988; daughter, Harriet Mulder in 2004; grandson, Michael Van Veldhuizen in 1980; great-grandson, David Van Veldhuizen in 2014; and four siblings: John Kragt, Ben Kragt, Ed Kragt and Katie De Zeeuw.

Funeral Service--
Friday December 19, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at First Reformed Church, Thursday December 18, 2014, 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.
