Doctor Andrew Struble – December 16, 1869 – November 20, 1961

RITES HELD WEDNESDAY FOR DR. A. STRUBLE

Last Monday, November 20, Kansas lost in the death of Glasco's Dr. Andrew Struble, one of its oldest medical practioners -- some say its very oldest.

Born December 16, 1869, in Newmansville, Illinois, Dr. Struble was the oldest son of Judge George Struble and Sarah Ellen Waring. He received his degree in medicine from the medical school of Northwestern University. Later he did post-graduate work at Tulane University in New Orleans and at the Chicago School of Optometry.

He began practicing in Sheldon, Iowa, but soon moved to Inwood, Iowa, where were born his two sons by his first wife, Lucy Goodell Struble.

In Inwood Dr. Struble did pioneer work in surgery, performing appendectomies in a day when the wisdom of such operations was a hotly debated topic.

In 1909, he moved to Oklahoma, where he continued the practice of medicine at Paul's Valley, and then later, in 1916, to Petersburg, Illinois. Finally in 1917, Dr. Struble purchased the practice of Dr. Charles Stein of Glasco, where he continued medical practice for more than thirty years.

As he became older he gave up his country practice for office consultations, particularly optical work. A large part of his time in his later years was given over to the direction of the drug store, which he had purchased in 1926.

Dr. Struble's first wife died in 1920, and two years later his younger son, Phil, was drowned in the Solomon River. His oldest son, George, is Professor of English at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania.

On March 24, 1921, he married Ida Clark of Glasco, and from this union came two children, Phyllis, now a teacher at Beloit High School, and Andrew, owner of the Struble Pharmacy.

Surviving the deceased are three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, and one sister. One grandson, Dr. George Waring Struble, son of George G. Strubel, lives in Eugene, Oregon, and has two children, Andy and Jenifer. A granddaughter, Mrs. Norman Freed, living in Cleveland, Ohio, is a daughter of George G. Struble. She has one son, Jonathan. Andrew Struble of Glasco has four children: Stephanie, Andrea, Patricia and Philip. The sole surviving sister is Mrs. Joseph Saunders of Buffalo, New York.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 22, 1961, at 2:00 p.m. from the Glasco Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Baker officiating. Mr. Ronald King was the vocalist, accompanied by Mrs. Nadine Teasley at the organ. Pallbearers were Fred Harper, Jack Jordan, Francis Dillon, Marvin Chapman, Dwaine Smejkal, and Charles Studt. Interment was in Glasco cemetery with Dean Funeral Home of Glasco in charge of arrangements.
