Elvira Ann, daughter of Herman C. and Emma (Claussen) Kock, was born March 24, 1924 at Evergreen Lawn Farm, two miles south of Inwood, Iowa. Growing up, Elvira was a member of Richland Busy Bees 4-H Club. She graduated from Inwood High School in 1941. She graduated from South Dakota Beauty Academy and later was certified to teach public school.

Elvira was united in marriage with “my lieutenant” Leo J. Johnson on July 14, 1945 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Inwood. To this union three children were born: JoAnn, Warren, and Ruth. Together the couple farmed northeast of Inwood until retiring in 1982 and moving into Inwood in 1984. During the farming years, Elvira served as leader of the Rich-Lo-Belles 4-H Club and enjoyed her monthly meetings of the Cotton Club and Birthday Club, as well as being active in the Ladies’ Aid and Circles at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. For a time, she also did custom upholstery and sewing. Elvira and Leo were recognized as the Inwood Kiwanis Volunteers of the Year for their work during the building of the Inwood Community Center.

Elvira enjoyed quilting and was active in Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Inwood community activities for many years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 310 and served with Leo on the Board of the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, Minnesota. Leo died on June 3, 2004.

Surviving relatives include her children: JoAnn (Len) Null of Great Falls, Montana, Warren (Carol) Johnson of Carmel, Indiana, and Ruth Johnson of Inwood; grandchildren Brian (Stacy) Johnson, Jeffery Johnson, Michelle Johnson; great-grandchildren Sye White and Jordan Flannagan; brother, Ralph (Jean) Kock of Inwood; sister, Eileen Veenis of Canton, SD as well as several nieces and nephews. Watching the “little ones” brought her great joy.

Elvira was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; brother, Ray Kock; brother-in-law Gerrit “Moe” Veenis.
