July 1, 1927 - July 21, 2014

Ireton, Iowa~ Fred Holtrop, 87, of Ireton, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2014 at his residence in Ireton.

Visitation will begin at noon Friday, with the family present from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ireton, Iowa. Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ireton with Rev. Andrew Carlson officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Fred was born on July 1, 1927 in Doon, Iowa to Louis and Tillie (Zwaan) Holtrop; he was the oldest of their seven children. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1945 and attended Morningside College. Fred married Rena Kool on December 29, 1949 at the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden, Iowa.

His career was comprised of a variety of jobs, from farming to cutting ice off the Big Sioux River during winter to be used for refrigeration during summer months. He owned his own TV sales and repair business for several years, but the job he was known for, always went back to, and retired from was trucking. He loved to travel, and took his family to almost every state in the union. Fred enjoyed fishing and baseball, and loved basketball, especially March Madness!
Fred was a veteran of WWII, served in the Navy, and spent time on Okinawa and in China before returning home.

He is survived by his wife; five sons, Larry and Brenda of Great Bend, Kansas, Daryl and Sandy of Maurice, Iowa, Gary and MaDonna, David, and Mark, all of Ireton, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis of Chicago, Illinois and Elwyn of Denver, Colorado; and two sisters, Grace Huenink of Hawarden, Iowa and Twyla Elkins of Sacramento, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roger and Henry.
