William Pruitt – January 22, 1842 – June 22, 1937

LARCHWOOD VET IS BURIED FRIDAY; MILITARY HONORS
“UNCLE BILLY” PRUITT A RESIDENT OF COUNTY FOR 47 YEARS

William Pruitt, one of three surviving veterans of the Civil War living in Lyon County, passed away at the home of his son Frank Pruitt, in Larchwood, on Thursday evening of last week. He was 95 years and five months of age, and for the past few years had been a semi-invalid.

Funeral services were held at the opera house at Larchwood Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, and were of a military nature. Flessner Post, American Legion, was in charge, and the members, so far as possible, attended in the uniforms they wore in the World War. The casket was draped in the American flag that is issued by the United States to all honorably discharged veterans. At the cemetery, a detachment of ex-service men fired a salute over the grave and a bugler sounded “taps”
Rev. Wm. Pates of the Community church, was in charge of the service.

William Pruitt was born January 22, 1842, in Brown County, Indiana. On January 31, 1867, he was united in marriage with Emily McKinney at Buffalo, Indiana. They moved to Benton County, Iowa, where they resided a few years, later, moving to Lyon County in March 1889. They lived on a farm near Larchwood until 1900, then moved to the town of Larchwood, to the place where he resided until the time of his death.

To this union were born six children, three of whom preceded him in death. His wife passed away January 29, 1926.

The surviving members of the family are Frank and James of Larchwood, Edward of Sioux Falls, also eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

During the Civil War, William was the youngest of five brothers who joined the union army. He enlisted at the age of19, and served four years with the Union forces, being enrolled as a member of the 50th Indiana Infantry.
