Obituary:

Rock Valley, Iowa -- Elmer Boon, Sr., 80, of Rock Valley, died Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Friday, March 7, 2014 at First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 12:00-4:00 pm at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley and with family from 5:00-7:00 pm at First Christian Reformed Church. Memorials may be directed to Hope Haven and condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Elmer Boon, Sr., son of Marinus and Hendrika (Van Bemmel) Boon, was born August 18, 1933 near Doon, Iowa. He married Fanny Mae Haan on September 17, 1954 at Hills, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army from May 1955 to February 1957 and was stationed in Korea. Elmer and Fanny lived in Rock Valley where Elmer was in the animal feed business and Pioneer Seed Corn business. He was an active member of First Christian Reformed Church where he served on many committees and he served on various boards including Rock Valley Christian School and Hope Haven (volunteering nearly 7,000 hours). He enjoyed bowling and golfing with friends and relatives. His prayer was for salvation for himself, his children, and grandchildren.

Elmer is survived by his five children, Elmer Dean (Lori) Boon of Rock Valley, Jackie Hanson of Salem, Oregon, Dan (Julie) Boon of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Tammy (Dean) Sybesma of Manhattan, Montana, and Terry (Dana) Boon of Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren: Austin (Lisa) Boon, Janie (Jared) Bonestroo, Jacob (Teresa) Vande Griend, Ryan Vande Griend, Nicole (Corey) Winkelpleck, Valarie and Justin Boon, Cassie, Tessa and Shayna Sybesma, Davis and Brooks Boon; four step-grandchildren, Jamie Hill, Jessie Adamski, Jacob and Jared Flanigan; one great-grandchild; four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marv (Eileen) Boon of Hull, Iowa, and John (Beverly) Boon of Rock Valley; four sisters, Mary Steensma of Middleville, Michigan, Martha (Bernie) De Jager of Doon, Hilda (Dale) Vink of Doon, and Joan (Virgil) Horstman of Hull; and one sister-in-law, Harriet Van Hofwegen of Rock Valley.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Fanny Mae on March 7, 2008; two infant siblings; three brothers, Martin, Ben (Hermina), and Andrew (Johanna) Boon; three sisters, Henrietta (Gerrit) Nibbelink, Grace (Marinus) Van Hofwegen, Gert (Gerald) Van Engen; and brother-in-law, Herm Steensma.
