(September 23, 1917 - January 31, 2014)

Rock Rapids, Iowa - Mabel Baker, age 96, of Rock Rapids, died on Friday, January 31, 2014 at Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 3rd, 2014 at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, Iowa, with Rev. Dean Shelly officiating. Private family burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Our Aunt Mabel Baker went home to heaven Friday, January 31, 2014, at the age of 96. Mabel was born September 23, 1917. She was the daughter of Peter and Anna (Vander Borg) Baker. Mabel was born, raised, educated, worked, and shared her life with so many people in Rock Rapids.

While Mabel never married, or had children of her own, she was a tender loving “mother” to so many of her nieces and nephews. She never went to college, she was the source of knowledge to all those who her life touched. Mabel never owned her own home, but she brightened the homes of all those that knew her. She spent all of her adult life selflessly giving; she took or needed very little. She was a simple person with few possessions, but she had a heart of gold and she stored wealth of treasured memories that most of us will never know.

In her later years while a resident of the Rock Rapids Care Centre, she could no longer hear; but to those who would visit her in the nursing home, she would speak volumes of her love for them. Bless you Aunt Mabel. Thanks for touching our lives. As you enter Heaven, we know you’ll be greeted by your Mom and Dad, brother Peter, and sisters Margaret and Nellie, niece Mary (Baker) Wargowsky and her husband Ken, nephew Fred Hoppe Jr., and niece Laura (Rolands) Baker.

Mabel is lovingly remembered by nieces and nephews John and Sam (Marohl) Schulte of Rock Rapids, Janice Schulte of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Judy (Schulte) and Jerry Stork of Hubbard, Nebraska, Linda (Dunn) Hoppe of Rock Rapids, Peter C. Baker of Dalhart, Texas, and Hank (Henry) and Dottie Baker, of Sioux City; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
