FUNERAL OF FRANK HOSFORD

Funeral services for the late Frank Hosford were held from the M.E. Church Thursday afternoon, Rev. G. Wadding pastor of the Federated Churches, officiating. The attendance was large and the floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, both attesting in a mute manner to the high esteem and regard in which the deceased man was held by Larchwood people. Interment was in the local cemetery.

Obituary -- Frank W. Hosford was born on a farm in Taylor county, Iowa, on September 13, 1878, and was at the time of his death nearing the age of thirty-eight years. He was one of seven children, six of whom together with his aged mother survive. The deceased man came here from Missouri 15 years ago and resided here continuously until his death.

On November 1, 1911, he was united in marriage to Miss Grace Irene Blue, and to this union there have been three children born, whom with the mother mourn the loss of a husband and father. Mr. Hosford passed from this life at 9 o'clock a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 1916, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Relatives from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John R. Blue of Sioux Falls, Mrs. G. W. Freeman and daughter of Lake Preston, South Dakota, Mrs. T.B. Martin of Colton, South Dakota. On account of serious illness of the mother of the deceased man, his relatives at Warrensburg, Missouri, were prevented from attending the funeral.

The following is a tribute to the memory of Frank W. Hosford, passed by the M.W.A. order of Larchwood, of which the deceased man was a member at the time of his death:

Whereas, Divine Providence, in His infinite wisdom, has seen fit to call from his earthly work one of our neighbors, Frank W. Hosford, there . . . .
---------------------------------------------

Frank, or "shorty," as he was called by his friends, underwent an operation for appendicitis about five years ago. About a year afterwards a severe pain in the stomach and bowels developed and from time to time it recurred. Each time until his fatal illness he was given relief without great difficulty and when he was attacked similarly on Saturday assigned it to his old trouble. However, the usual treatment was without effect and he was taken to Sioux Falls on Sunday afternoon. Here he was given a thorough examination and his illness was pronounced as a result of adhesions, resulting from his former operation, and causing an obstruction to the bowels. He consented to an immediate operation, two surgeons working over him for an hour and a half, and during the course of the operation forty-one inches of the bowels were removed. Following this disclosure very little hope for his recovery was felt, and the worst fears of friends were realized when on Tuesday he passed away.

We understand that funeral services will be held this afternoon, at 2 o'clock, if relatives reach here.

Frank came here from Missouri about 15 years ago, and for three or four years worked for Will and John Herbat on their farms. Later he worked at masonry and was employed at that work until taken sick. For a couple of years he was engaged in the restaurant business in partnership with I.T. Wightman, but sold out to his partner some three years ago and returned to his former occupation. He was a popular young man and was a steady, industrious and hard worker. He was a member of the M.W.A. order, carrying $2,000 insurance, and the Woodmen will probably have charge of the funeral services. At this time details for the funeral are incomplete, but the Rev. G.C. Wadding will deliver the funeral sermon. An obituary will be given in our next issue if we can secure the date.
