Man Working On Gravel Project Fatally Injured

Crushed beneath the wheels of a loaded gravel truck in front of the general hospital ward at the United States veterans administration facility No. 80, at Fort Mackenzie, late yesterday afternoon. Vincent F. Schemmer, 33 , of 100 Gladstone street, died two hours following the accident.

Schemmer, employed by the Northwestern Engineering company in the graveling of the roads at the Fort attempted to board the moving truck as it passed him in front of building No. 9, the hospital ward. Hampered by stiff new boots he missed his footing on the sagging running board and fell beneath the rear wheel. The driver, whose name could not be ascertained, expressed the belief that the man did not pass entirely beneath the wheel since Schemmer
maintained his grasp on the side of the truck and his face remained in sight of the driver. He was dragged a short distance before the machine could be brought to a stop.

ROSE TO HIS FEET
A sweater which Schemmer was wearing was partly pulled from his body but the man was free of the wheel when the driver reached his aid. He rose to his feet unaided but was taken into the hospital on a stretcher, on which he attempted to sit upright, causing bystanders to believe that he was not seriously injured. In the ward, however, doctors found that his lungs had been punctured and that he had been badly crushed, sustaining complicated internal
injuries. He experienced great difficulty in breathing and died at about 5 p.m.

Coroner Schunk, tentatively announced today that no investigation would be conducted into the case beyond the usual inquiry.
Schemmer, formerly of Alvord, Iowa, was an architect by profession.

He is survived by his widow, Eva Schemmer, their three-months old child, Peter Allen, who was born May 28, and his mother, Mrs. Henry Meyer. The Schemmers had been living in Sheridan about a year.
