Harvey Gruis, 86, of Little Rock, Lyon county, Iowa died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services were Friday at Salem Reformed Church, Little Rock, with interment in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Mr. Gruis was born May 25, 1917, near George, the son of Heiko and Minnie (Casjens) Gruis. He grew up and attended country school near George. After his education, he worked on the family farm and as a farm hand. He was drafted into the military and served during World War II.

On Jan. 9, 1943, he married Sylvia Nagel in Joplin, Mo. After his discharge in December 1945, the couple lived near Little Rock while he drove truck two years. In 1947, the couple started farming west of Little Rock. In 1951, they moved to a farm south of Adrian, Minn. In 1984 they moved to Little Rock.

He was a member of Buss-Johnson American Legion Post in Little Rock.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Lloyd of Sibley, Stanley of Cleveland, Minn., Kevin of Luverne, Minn., and Layton of Adrian; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. George (Viola) Jansen of George and Arlene Kruse of Sibley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Justus in infancy, Joe, Charlie, Ivan, Edward and Elmer, and one sister, Carrie Nagel.
