Merle Hanson, 85, of Osage died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Services were Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage, with interment in Richland Cemetery, Inwood.

Mr. Hanson was born Sept. 22, 1918, at Inwood, the son of Fred and Anna (Thorvaldsen) Hanson. They moved to Logan in 1924. After his graduation in 1936, the family moved to Granger.

He attended Iowa State University three years, then served in the army four years and army reserves 25 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. He attended South Dakota State University, receiving a degree in agriculture in 1977.

On Aug. 30, 1947, he married Hazel Olson in Inwood. He worked in Chicago, Ill., two years, farmed in the Osage area 18 years and worked as a chemistry lab technician in Charles City until his retirement in 1985.

Survivors include his wife, three children and one brother, Virgil of Houston, Texas.
