Lorne Delbert Harms, age 87, of Clear Lake, SD passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at his home near Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2013 in the First Baptist Church, Clear Lake with Pastor Daniel Mikesh officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 14th from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD and will resume Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be on Friday, August 16th at 2:00 p.m. in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, George, Iowa with Rev. H. Paul Fischer officiating.

Houseman Funeral Home of Clear Lake, So. Dak., is in charge of arrangements.

Clear Lake, South Dakota – Lorne Delbert Harms, age 87, of Clear Lake, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at his home near Clear Lake. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2013 in the First Baptist Church, Clear Lake. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 14th from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake. Burial will be on Friday, August 16th at 2:00 p.m. in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, George, Iowa.

Lorne Delbert Harms was born on January 28, 1926 to Wesley D. and Grace (Snuttjer) Harms in George, Iowa where he was raised and attended country school. He was baptized on June 6, 1926 at Hope Reformed Church. Upon completion of his education, he began farming with his father until he enlisted into the United States Army on April 3, 1945. Lorne was stationed in Okinawa, Japan where he served as a medic during World War II. Following his honorable discharge on December 3, 1946 he returned to the farm near George.

Lorne was united in marriage to Geraldine Blau on June 20, 1947 at Geraldine’s parents’ home near George. The couple farmed near George before moving to Sibley, Iowa, in 1955 where he was a can milk hauler for four years. In 1959, they moved to the farm south of Clear Lake, SD where he farmed until his retirement in 2001. Lorne passed away at his home on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at the age 87 years, 6 months and 14 days.

As an adult Lorne was baptized into the Baptist faith and became a member of First Baptist Church in Clear Lake where he served on the church council. He was a past member of the Bemis Holland Presbyterian Church where he also served as an Elder. Lorne was a member of the Charles-Curry American Legion Post #49 in Clear Lake and of the Senior Citizens where he enjoyed playing cards. He was very proud and honored to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C to see the World War II Memorial. Lorne enjoyed being with his family.

He is survived by his wife Geraldine Harms, Clear Lake, South Dakota; six children: Erma (Donald) Larsen, Stockholm, South Dakota, Marlys Elms, Watertown, South Dakota, Lorraine (Donald) Puckett, Piedmont, South Dakota, Gerald Harms, Watertown, South Dakota, Jolene (Donald VanDykhorst) Harms, Castlewood, South Dakota and Loretta (Mike) Briggs, Watertown, South Dakota; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; two sisters: Carol (Gary) Boor, Sibley, Iowa, and Verna Schneiderman, Little Rock, Iowa; one brother Kenneth (Myrna) Harms, Sibley, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends the Boeke Boys as well as many other friends and neighbors.

Lorne was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Bryan Harms and one step grandson, Victor Briggs.
