Sioux Falls - Vernon Schmidt passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was 83 years old.
Vernon John Schmidt was born in Sioux County, Iowa, on June 27, 1925. He was confirmed on March 24, 1940 in Rock Rapids.

He was married to Beverly Koll on March 5. 1946. They began married life in George, Iowa. Vern started as a meat cutter and in 1954 purchased the George Market.

In 1960 he began employment with John Morrell and Co. in Sioux Falls. He had a sales route in Willmar, Minnesota. He was transferred to Denver in 1971 where he was area sales manager. He received additional promotions there and was transferred to Sioux Falls in 1972. He held a number of positions in Sales and Administration. He retired in 1984 after 24 years with the company.

Vern was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Throughout his life he was active in various churches where he was a member of Choir, Men's Chorus, and president of the church council. He was an active Gideon.

The most important asset for Vern was his family. It was his wish that he be influential in witnessing for Christ, especially to his children and grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He loved people--being around people; joking and conversing with others. Everyone was a friend.

Vern and Bev had 63 years of a happy marriage and were blessed with 2 children: son, Craig (Marlene) of Sgt.Bluff, IA and daughter, Kimberly (Rick) Bartlett of Sioux Falls, four grandchildren: Stephen Schmidt Asada (Yuko), Phillip Schmidt, Stacey Thompson (Ray), Jamen Bartlett, and one great-grandson: Aaron Schmidt.
In addition to his immediate family, Vern is survived by many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.

Visitation will begin at 12 pm with the family present from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Miller West Funeral Chapel, 41st Street & Valley View Road. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls with burial at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, IA.
