FUNERAL NOTICE:

George, Iowa - Gerald “Gene” Scholten, age 87, of George, died Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in George.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday, June 17, 2013 at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church of George, with Rev. Paul Fischer officiating.

Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George.

Visitation will be Sunday June 16, 2013 from 4 PM to 8 PM with family present from 6 PM to 8 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home in George, Iowa.

George, Iowa - Gerald “Gene” Scholten, age 87 of George, died Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in George.

Gene Scholten was born March 4, 1926 on the family farm south of George to Leendert “Lane” and Tena (Zorgdrager) Scholten. He was raised on the family farm and attended Wheeler Township Country School as a youth and graduated from George Community High School in 1944. Gene was not a veteran but wanted to serve. He was needed on the family farm and obeyed the government’s instructions that one son should remain on the farm to help the war cause at home.

He was united in marriage to Gertrude Vander Kooi of Hull, Iowa, on December 29, 1948 at the brides’ parents’ house. The young couple met while chivareeing. Being a lifetime farmer, he and Gertrude raised their family on the family farm south of George and the couple celebrated 64 years of marriage together. In earlier years he worked at several farm implement dealers in George including the Case Dealership and the International Dealership. He also worked at Sudenga’s part time and was a Meter Reader for REC Electric Co. after semi retiring from farming. Gene was very involved with his church and other civic entities.

He served on the George Cemetery Board, George School Board, the Farmers’ Cooperative Elevator Board, Wheeler Township Trustee, and various church appointments such as Reformed Church Consistory member, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school superintendent. Gene loved tinkering in his shop and for his grandchildren built a barrel train that was driven in many 4th of July parades in George. This past Wednesday, June 12, 2013 Gene passed away at the George Good Samaritan Center at the age of 87. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Scholten of George, Iowa; son, Roger (Valerie) Scholten of Ruther Glen, Virginia; daughter, Janice (Randy) Huss of Ashton, Iowa; son, Gary ( Lynette) Scholten of Brandon, So. Dak.; daughter, Ruth Scholten of Sheldon, Iowa; grandchildren, Keith (Jennifer) Scholten; and their children, Brian, Ethan and Andrew; Jennifer (Benji) Snyder, and their children Evie, Noelle and Quentin; Brian (Val) Huss, Ben Huss, Kyle Huss, and Kevin Huss; Kory Scholten and Megan Scholten; brother, Leonard (Roberta) Scholten of Sioux Falls, So. Dak.; and brothers-in-law, Duane Buttenob of Aurelia, Iowa and Jim Vander Kooi of Hull, Iowa.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Leendert and Tena; two infant brothers; sister, Caroline (Rudy) Riebeling; brother, John (Sally) Scholten; sister, Chris Buttenob, and sister, Lena Mae (Wally) Winter.
