Gertie Martens, 81, of Hills, Minn., died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at Luverne (Minn.) Community Hospital.

Services were Friday at Steen Reformed Church with interment in Eastside Cemetery, Steen, Minn.

Gertie Vanden Brink was born Feb. 10, 1922, near Alvord, the daughter of Ceel and Tillie (Stip) Vanden Brink. She grew up and attended school in the Inwood and Lester areas.

On May 9, 1945, she married James Martens in Lester. They lived in Oakland, Calif., then moved to Lester. They owned and operated Martens & Boom Trucking Co., until 1956 when they moved to the Steen area.

Her husband died Feb. 28, 1986. She moved to Hills in January 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Merle of Valley Springs, S.D., and Kevin of Steen; two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Carole) Bosch of Bellevue, Neb., and Mrs. Steve "Ben" (Marlys) Dirks of Luverne, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ceel of Alvord, Henry of Rock Rapids and Gerrit of Inwood, and one sister, Cornelia Schouwenburg of Hills.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
