Gary J. Bontje – February 14, 1935 – July 31, 2011

Sioux Falls - Gary Bontje, Sioux Falls, SD, died July 31, 2011, in Sioux Falls. He was 76.

Gary Bontje was born February 14, 1935, in Heemstede, Netherlands, the son of Gerrit and Francina (Goossens) Bontje. He came to the USA with his family in 1952, and settled in Larchwood, IA.

Gary served in the US Army 1956 thru 1958, and was honorably discharged. After his service, he spent three years in California. In 1962, he moved to Sioux Falls where he worked as a carpenter.

Gary married Lois Stoner on September 29, 1978. After retiring from Kriens Construction in 1997, he worked for three summers for the City Park and Recreation Department. He was a long time member of the American Legion, and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Wilma; brothers, Tony and Ed; and nephew, Paul. He is survived by his wife, Lois; step-daughter, Vicki Bender (John); three grand-daughters, Michelle, Sarah, and Jamie Bender; two sisters, Francine Hemauer and Antonnette Evans; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, August 5, 2011, at St. John American Lutheran Church, with visitation held one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Avera Home Hospice.
