Anthony Edward “Tony” Bontje – January 22, 1924 – May 15, 2005

ANTHONY E. "TONY" BONTJE, 2301 S. West Avenue, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 78 years, 3 months, 23 days

Liturgical Wake Service and Holy Rosary will be at 7:00 PM Friday, May 17, 2002 Christ the King Catholic Church, Sioux Falls, SD with Reverend Jerry Ranek, officiating

MASS of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 18, 2002 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Sioux Falls, SD; Monsignor Don Kettler, Celebrant. Interment will be in Larchwood Catholic Cemetery, Larchwood, Iowa.

Anthony Edward "Tony" Bontje, son of Gerrit and Francina (Goossens) Bontje, was born January 22, 1924 in Haarlemmermeer, The Netherlands. He grew up in the Netherlands. As a young man Tony was confined in a forced labor camp in Berlin, Germany for three years. He moved with his parents and siblings to Larchwood, IA in 1952.

Tony was united in marriage with Charlotte M. Murphy in Larchwood on June 11, 1955. The couple made their home in Larchwood before moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1971. Tony worked in inventory control at Cummins and Brown Drug before retiring.

Following retirement he worked part-time at the 33rd and Minnesota Avenue Hy-Vee store for nine years. Tony was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church and sang in the choir there for 16 years. He was active in Cursillo. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and the Christ the King Men's Club. He loved flowers and making floral arrangements. He enjoyed gardening, reading and sharing his Catholic faith. Above all, Tony cherished his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Charlotte Bontje, Sioux Falls, SD; his children, Steve Bontje and his wife, Debbie, Pierre, SD, Elaine Quinn and her husband, Mike, Lake Havasu, AZ, Jeanine Draper and her husband, Don, Anaheim, CA, Mike Bontje, Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Bontje and his wife, Theresa, Sioux Falls, SD, Gary Bontje and his wife, Lois, Sioux Falls, SD, two sisters, Francine Hemauer and her husband, Bob, Sun Prairie, WI, Tonni Evans and her husband, Larry, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma Zacher.
