Edward J. Bontje, son of Gerrit and Francine (Goossens) Bontje, was born November 3, 1926 in Hoofdorp, Netherlands. He grew up and received his education there. Ed worked as a carpenter before immigrating with his family to the United States in 1952.

They settled in Larchwood, IA where he continued his career as a carpenter. Ed was united in marriage with Theresa Vlaming in Larchwood on September 29, 1956. The couple made their home in Larchwood until moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1971.

Ed retired from Kriens Construction in 1994 after 30 years with the company and 54 years as a carpenter. He was a member of St. Lambert's Catholic Church.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Theresa; eight children, Alex Bontje, Sioux Falls, SD, Lorraine deRegnier Williams and her husband, Sylvester, Rosemount, MN, Andrew Bontje and his wife, Lillie, Morris, OK, Susan Palmer and her husband, Wayne, Sioux Falls, SD, Bryan Bontje and his wife, Lisa, Fargo, ND, Paul Bontje and his wife, Darcie, Las Vegas, NV, Sharon Downing and her husband, Jeffrey, Streamwood, IL, Kevin Bontje and his wife, Jane, Worthing, SD; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Gary Bontje and his wife, Lois, Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Francine Hemauer and her husband, Bob, Sun Prairie, WI, Tonni Evans and her husband, Larry, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Anthony; and one sister, Wilma Zacher.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at St. Lambert's Catholic Church following the committal service.
