Mary Rita (Sullivan) Lewandowski – March 11, 1919 – April 25, 1976

Obituary

Funeral services for Mary Rita Lewandowski, who died Sunday at the Sturgis Community Memorial Hospital, were held Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Frank Vallo and Father Gilbert Stack officiating.

Christian wake services were held Wednesday at the F.O. Jolley Funeral Home.
Burial was in the Black Hills National Cemetery under the direction of the F.O. Jolley Funeral Home.

Special music was provided by Virginia Hardy, organist, and Roy Farrell, vocalist.

The pallbearers were Orville Myers, Art Piehl, Owen McDermott, Bob Short, George Green and John Brunson.

A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Community Memorial Hospital Emergency room for coronary care equipment.

Rita Sullivan was born on March 11, 1919 on a farm near Worthing, SD to Robert and Mary Sullivan She moved with her parents to Alvord, Iowa in 1927. She graduated from high school in 1937 and in 1941 graduated as a registered nurse from St Vincent School of Nursing at Sioux City, Iowa.

She pursued the nursing career and in 1945 she moved to the Black Hills area and has worked in the Sturgis Community Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home, McKee Nursing home and the Ft Meade Veterans Hospital until her retirement in recent years.

She was married to Peter G. Lewandowski on January 18, 1947 at Sturgis.

She is survived by her husband, Peter of Sturgis; one son, William of Sturgis; two daughters, Mary Ellen (Mrs Jim Carroll) of Paramount, Calif and Margaret (Mrs. Ivan) Bettelyoun of Pine Ridge, SD; her mother, Mary Sullivan of Alvord, Iowa; two brothers, Joseph of Sioux Falls, and Robert of Alvord, Iowa; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert and a daughter, Patricia, her father and one sister.
