Nicknamed "Jack" by elder half-brother Loren and brother Herb, Horace attended Richland #5 country school four miles east of Inwood, later graduating from Inwood Public High School with the Class of 1928. Following graduation Horace helped on the family farm and assumed operation of 2287, 240th Street.

Horace married Jemima Rorem on June 11, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, at Nashua, Iowa. They farmed together for 65 years. For a time, Horace led the Richland 4-H club. He was an active Farm Bureau member and attended the farmers Night School classes provided by the Vocational Agriculture department of Inwood High School.

Horace particularly enjoyed the volleyball games following the meetings at the Institute Hall. Horace was honored for his years of hog production at a banquet by Sioux Falls Stock Yards' Rice Brothers commission firm.

Horace "Uncle Jack" was responsive and attentive to the experiences and interests of his children, nephews, nieces, grand children and great-grandchildren, helping to create fond memories of their farm adventures.
