(December 1, 1948 - May 15, 2008)

Rock Rapids, Iowa -- RoxAnn Birkeland, age 59 of Rock Rapids, died Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the Sanford Medical Center in Rock Rapids.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Monday, May 19th at United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids, with Rev. Anita Bane officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Sunday, May 18th from 2 – 8 PM, with the family present from 6 – 8 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

RoxAnn Birkeland was born on December 1, 1948 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Lois (Bauer) Selken. She was raised in Rock Rapids and attended the community school. After her education she began working for Raven Industries in Sioux Falls, SD. She was married on November 30, 1968 in Sioux Falls, SD. A few years following she moved to Las Vegas, NV and worked at Silver City Casino.

Several years later she returned to Iowa and worked at K-Products in Orange City, Iowa, until she moved to Le Mars, Iowa, where she worked at Wells Blue Bunny. In 2005 RoxAnn was diagnosed with cancer and returned to Rock Rapids, Iowa. This past Thursday, May 15, 2008 she died at the Sanford Merrill Medical Center in Rock Rapids, Iowa, at the age of 59.

RoxAnn enjoyed bowling, playing cards, pool, darts and collecting Dolphin ornaments. She was especially fond of her grandchildren.

She is survived by her two children, Jamie (wife Heather) Birkeland of Emerson, NE and Kimberly Whelden of Sioux Falls, SD; eleven grandchildren; her mother, Lois Selken of Rock Rapids, IA; a sister, Marlys (husband Ed) Brown of Rock Rapids, IA; two brothers, Mike (wife Lynn) Selken of Rock Rapids, IA and Randy Selken of Knoxville, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Selken.
