Larchwood, Iowa - Jay Anderson, age 79, of Custer, South Dakota, died Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Custer Regional Hospital in Custer.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 9th, 2012 at United Church of Christ in Larchwood with Rev. Kelly Volk officiating. Burial will follow in Larchwood Cemetery with Military Honors from Flessner American Legion Post No. 561. Visitation will be Sunday, January 8th from 3 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Larchwood.

Jay Edward Anderson was born May 31, 1932 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the Son of Edward and Irene (Pruitt) Anderson. He was raised in Larchwood, Iowa and attended Larchwood Public School. He graduated in 1950.

Not able to find a job because of the Korean War he enlisted in the Marine Corps. Shortly after, he did his tour on the front lines in Korea from July 1950-August 1951. He then moved around on ships until his discharge in 1954.

He married Betty Marie Brown on June 27, 1959. Together they remained in Larchwood. He did carpenter work of all aspects most of his life, as well as welding and fabricating. He greatly enjoyed figuring out what others could not.

He is a lifetime member of the United Church of Christ in Larchwood. Since his discharge in 1954 he has been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Jay and Betty enjoyed dances, cards, camping and fishing. Jay enjoyed music, reading, the Black Hills and being around animals but mostly story telling.

After a long and courageous battle with cancer and pneumonia which is what took his life, Wife Betty and Son Mitchell will cherish the countless memories and stories as well as Sister, Betty (Charles) Smith; Sisters-in-law, Carol (Bill) Van Gammeren, and Evelyn Brown; nieces and nephews, Pam, Bonnie, Jeff, Carol, Sheila, Rich, Linda, Darin and Katie, Jared, Luke, Anna, Paul, Pete, Carol, Nick, Brian and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by sister, Bev Schreurs; nephew, J.J. Schreurs; Edward and Irene Anderson; Parents and Daughter Lisa Marie Anderson.
