Mary E. Monroe, age 77 of Rock Rapids, Iowa, died after an extended illness on September 12, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Funeral service will be on Monday, September 17th at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, Iowa, with Rev. Carolyn Salberg officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery at 6605 Morningside Ave. in Sioux City, Iowa.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 14th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, Iowa.

(May 23, 1935 - September 12, 2012)

Rock Rapids, Iowa - Mary E. Monroe, age 77 of Rock Rapids, died after an extended illness on September 12, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday., September 17th at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, with Rev. Carolyn Salberg officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery at 6605 Morningside Ave. in Sioux City, Iowa. Visitation will be Sunday, September 16th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Mary Elizabeth Monroe was born May 23rd, 1935 in Elk Point, South Dakota to Fred and Alta Hummel. Mary married Arlin E. Monroe on September 16th, 1950. Mary and Arlin lived in Sioux City until 1983 when a job promotion for Arlin allowed them both to relocate in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Mary dedicated her life to raising her family of four, working as secretary for the IPS Credit Union (Mid American) and serving as a day-care provider for many local parents and their children in Sioux City and Rock Rapids. Mary and Arlin were long time members and active volunteers in the Morningside Church Of Christ, in Sioux City and Christian Church (Disciples) Rock Rapids, Iowa. Mary enjoyed playing Bingo, crafting, card games, watching the Vikings, and shopping trips with many neighbors and friends. She especially enjoyed her time square dancing and camping, with Arlin while visiting their many friends and relatives throughout the United States.

Mary is survived by a son, Dale (Jean) Monroe, Marion, Iowa, Peggy (Jerry) Crosser, Utica, Nebraska, and Garnett (Doug) Weaver, Omaha, Nebraska. Also surviving are many grandchildren and great grandchildren that made her smile.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Arlin Monroe, a son, Donald Monroe and her parents, Fred and Alta Hummel, brothers Walt Hummel, Warren Hummel, Martin Hummel and sister Rae Henke.
