Trena Abels

(July 24, 1916 - January 11, 2012)

George, Iowa - Trena Abels, age 95 years, 5 months & 18 days of George, died on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Good Samaritan Society in George.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 14th at Jurrens Funeral Home at George, Iowa, with Pastor Brian Schafer, officiating. Burial will follow in the Zoar Presbyterian Cemetery, rural George.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George.

Trena Abels was born on July 24, 1916, the daughter of Frank and Minnie (Donker) Meyer. She grew up in the Sibley, Iowa, area. On January 14, 1938, she married John F. Abels at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They lived on a farm east of George, Iowa. They later moved to an acreage south of Worthington, Minnesota. During this time she worked at Sathers in Round Lake, Minnesota and Michaels in Worthington, Minnesota. They then moved to back to the Sibley area for a time and later returned to George. She was a resident at the Good Samaritan Society in George at the time of her death.

She was a lifetime member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George. Trena was in charge of the Cradle Roll and taught Sunday school for many years. Trena loved to bake and is remembered for her Sunday meals. Trena and her husband traveled after retiring. The high light of her life was spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Eugene "Gary" (Gertrude) Abels of Sibley, Iowa; two daughters, Alicia (Bernie) Marsh of Worthington, Minnesota and Martie (Larry) Fluit of Inwood, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Aletha Meyer of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Dora Meyer of Sibley, Iowa; one brother-in-law, George Abels of Worthington, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John in 1994; two brothers, Dick and John Meyer; one sister, Engeline Harberts; and two grandchildren.
