Joyce Ione Mantel

(June 4, 1927 - January 3, 2012)

Joyce Mantel, age 84, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Lyon Manor in Rock Rapids.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 6th at the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, with Reverend Mark Hansen, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids.

Joyce Ione Mantel was born on June 4, 1927, the daughter of Edward R. and Dorothea (Boll) File in Rock Rapids. She grew up in the Rock Rapids area and attended school in Doon, Iowa.

On November 14, 1942, Joyce was united in marriage to Clarence Bauer in Dakota City, NE. They were later divorced in 1960 and Clarence died on February 28, 1985. Then on June 18, 1966, she married Peter Mantel in Rock Rapids; Peter passed away on June 22, 1970.

For a time she was a part owner with her sister Bernice of Highway Lunch Café in Rock Rapids. Joyce later went to school and received her nursing degree and worked at Lyon Manor for seventeen years. After retirement she did volunteer work at the nursing homes, Kid’s Club and Hospice. Joyce was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids and very active in the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed collecting clowns, playing cards and especially visiting with family and friends.

Joyce is survived by one daughter, Brenda Hastings of Spencer, Iowa; one son, Barry Bauer of Doon, Iowa; six grandchildren, Terry (Billie Jo) Hastings of Armstrong, Iowa, Todd Hasting of Hull, Iowa, Melissa Zmudka of Primgar, Iowa, Jason (Jodi) Bauer, Jeremy (Jessica) Bauer and Jordan (Tara) Bauer all of Eldon, Missouri; eleven great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Ken File of Cherokee, Iowa and Gene (Alice) File of La Mars, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her first and second husbands, four brothers and three sisters.
