Wentworth, Howard

Obituary: Inwood, Iowa – Howard H. Wentworth, 94, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Fellowship Village, Inwood. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Inwood. Burial at Richland Cemetery. Rev. John Wolf will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Howard Hull Wentworth was born April 20, 1917 to Howard and Clara (Hull) Wentworth near Edgerton, Wisconsin. He graduated from Edgerton High School.

Howard continued his education in agriculture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and then by attending Engineering School in Milwaukee, WI. He enlisted the United States Army Air Force on July 11, 1941 at Scott Field, Illinois, was stationed and served as a Staff Sergeant at the Sioux Falls Airbase, Sioux Falls, So. Dak., where he taught radio mechanics.

Howard was united in marriage to Floy Holland on June 24, 1944 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Inwood, Iowa. He then went to Truax Field in Madison, WI until his discharge on October 29, 1945. After his discharge, Howard and Floy farmed near Inwood for 20 years and then farmed near Wilmont, MN for 21 years. Howard was the first farmer to use terracing as a conservation effort in Lyon County.

Howard and Floy retired back to Inwood in 1990. Howard worked as a custodian at Fellowship Village a few years and helped build the Inwood Community Center. Howard was a director at the Production Credit Association. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Inwood where he served as church treasurer and over 60 years in the Inwood American Legion. Howard’s priorities in life were church, family, and farming. Howard’s hobbies and interests were radio repair and bowling. Howard moved to Fellowship Village in August of 2002.

Howard is survived by his wife of 67 years, Floy; 3 children: Dianne (Curt) Johnson of Jasper, MN, Daniel (Diana) Wentworth of Flandreau, SD and Mary (Dennis) Roskam of Red Wing, MN; 9 grandchildren: Dana (Dan) Stein of Elkton, SD, Kristi (Brian) Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD, Amy (Jon) Brown of Mitchell, SD, Mark (Charney) Wentworth of Brookings, SD, Lee (Annette) Roskam of Newark, DE, Janelle (Garrett) Jaenke of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Katy Roskam of Woodbury, MN, Molly (Monty) Nelson of Bend, OR and Noelle Roskam of Great Falls, MT; 11 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lyle Wentworth; sisters: Verna Smith, Charlotte Noyce and Beulah Lyngaas.
