Marlyn J. Ackerman, age 79 of Ashton, IA died Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at the Sibley Nursing & Rehab in Sibley, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the Zoar Presbyterian Church rural George, IA, with Reverend Dale Lint officiating. Burial will follow in the Gilman Township Cemetery of Ashton, with military honors by the Ben Hoffman American Legion Post #290 of Ashton. Visitation will be Friday, October 29th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.

Marlyn James Ackerman was born on November 8, 1930, the son of Ed and Tena (Graves) Ackerman in rural George, IA. He attended country school near Ashton. Marlyn worked at the tile plant in Ashton and farmed till he entered the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954. He served for sometime in Japan.

On June 1, 1953, Marlyn married Berdeen Wibben in Santa Anna, CA, while he was in the service. After being honorably discharged from the Marines, the couple moved to a farm northwest of Ashton, where they farmed until retirement in 1995, and remained living there.

Marlyn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashton and served as a Deacon and a Trustee for many years. He enjoyed farming, camping, fishing, playing cards, and visiting with his friends and relatives. Marlyn liked spending time with his son, Roger and grandson, Kyle at their Body Shop and always looked forward to and enjoyed visits from Tonya, Steve and kids. He also always enjoyed going to his sister Marvella's for coffee.

Marlyn is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Berdeen Ackerman of Ashton, IA; son, Roger (Tami) Ackerman of Sibley, IA; two grandchildren, Tonya (Steve) Mitchell of Pleasant Hill, IA and Kyle Ackerman of Sibley; three great-grandchildren, Corbin, Corina and Camron Mitchell of Des Moines, IA; two sisters, Marvella Schaa of Sibley, IA and Nellie Bruns of Castle Rock, CO; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harvey Ackerman and sister, Verna Bruns.
