Mrs. Hans Heerde (Catherine Peters) was born April 29, 1849, in the village of Warfen, Holstein, Germany. She was baptized in infancy and when 14 years of age confirmed in the doctrines of the Lutheran church.

When 21 years of age she, with her mother and a brother, came to Davenport, Iowa. On April 11, 1872, she was united in marriage to Hans Heerde, who preceded her in death six years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Heerde resided in Davenport until 1884, when they moved onto a farm near Stockton, Iowa. In the spring of the year 1900 they came to Lyon county and lived on their farm southwest of Alvord until the year of 1912, when they retired and moved to Alvord, where the deceased has lived ever since.

For a number of years Mrs. Heerde has not enjoyed the best of health, but was able to be up and about. On April 29, her birthday, she became seriously ill. Everything possible was done to relieve her of her suffering. On Saturday, May 19, at one o’clock in the afternoon she passed away.

Mrs. Heerde was the mother of 12 children of whom 6 have preceded her to entermty. Surviving children are: Margaret (Mrs. Fred Heyden), of Alvord; Katie (Mrs. Henry Holtz), of Inwood; Julius, of Inwood; Bertha (Mrs. Johannes Schemmel), of New Liberty; Charlie, of Terril; Ella (Mrs. Rudolph Bauer), of Doon; 30 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and one brother, John Peters, of Davenport, also survive her.

Besides these she had many more distant relatives and a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Mrs. Heerde was a faithful wife and a devoted mother. She attained the age of 79 years and 20 days. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the house and at 2 o’clock in the Lutheran church, Rev. Erwin H. Jahr, officiating. The Lutheran choir sang several selections and Miss Esther Meyer sang a solo. Interment was in the Alvord Lutheran cemetery.
