Christ Geick Sr.

Christian F.W. Geick, Sr., died at his home in the city at 4:45 Saturday morning, February 25, 1928, after an illness of ten days. He had enjoyed exceptionally good health all his life, but on Tuesday Feb. 14, he had a sudden attack of asthma, from which he seemed to recover with the aid of a physician’s treatments. But on the following day he had another attack which effected his heart and kidneys.

Mr. Geick, known especially by the children as "Grandpa Geick", was born May 17, 1848, at Marnitz, in Mecklenburg, Germany, and where he spent his younger days. On Jan. 17, 1872, he was united in marriage to Henrietta Rogmann, also of Marnitz, who preceded him in death 12 years ago.

Soon after their marriage they emigrated to America, sailing from the old country April 16, 1873, and arriving in Lyon county June 9 of that year. He bought a farm in Wheeler township, Sioux county, where he farmed until the spring of 1902, when he moved to his farm near Rock Rapids, now occupied by his son, C.W. Geick. While living in Wheeler township he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church near Hull, of which church he is one of the charter members.

He went through all the hardships of the pioneer days. Due to a number of crop failures in the seventies he was obliged to move to Sheldon with his family, where he found employment as a day laborer. He had the misfortune of losing his faithful wife in 1916. In 1920 he was married for the second time to Mrs. Mary Link, who died in 1924. He leaves to mourn his loss his sons Henry, Christ, Herman and William, all of Rock Rapids, one brother, William, in Clayton county, Iowa, 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild and other relatives and friends. One son, Fredrieck, died in infancy and another, Otto, died in 1916. His only daughter, Mrs. H.D. Ossenfort, died in October, 1927. He would have been 80 years old, had he lived until May 17.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 29, at Immanuel Lutheran church, and were in charge of the pastor, Rev. E.H. Mueller. Internment was in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery near Hull. Short services were also held in St. Paul's church where Rev. Mueller was assisted by the pastor, Rev. E. Goeringer.

Henry Jansen, L.H. Wittrock, Fred Kemna, Fred Lauck, Wm. Aldenburg and Hoken Olsen acted as pallbearers. Music was furnished at the funeral services by a quartet, Richard Eders, Ray Brinkman, J.P. Kroger and Carl Borman.
