HAYENGA, BLOCKLINGER, KLAASSEN, THORNE

This community lost one of its oldest and most beloved citizens on Sunday of this week in the death of Mrs. L.H. Hayenga, Mrs. Hayenga, due to her age, had been failing in health for some time. Sunday afternoon, October 28, 1951, at about 5:45 p.m. she quietly and peacefully passed away.

Rev. and Mrs. Hayenga moved to George in 1932 and Rev. Hayenga passed away in 1933. Since that time Mrs. Hayenga made her home in George. Rev. and Mrs. Hayenga served in several charges, but prior to that time, has served as pastor of the Zoar Presbyterian church a period of twenty years.

Mrs. Hayenga is servived by 8 children Calvin H, of Phoenix, Arizona; Irvin, Luella, Mrs. Richard Klaahsen; Maurice, all of George; Lubertus, Irvington, New Jersey; Eugene, St. Ansgar, Iowa, Benjamin, Jacksonville, Florida; and Winona, Mrs. George Thorne, Ela Ebolowa, Africa.

Funeral services will be held from the Hayenga home at 1:30 and from Evenezer Presbyterian church on Thursday afternoon. A complete obituary will be published in next week’s issue of The Lyon County News. (From the Lyon County New)

OBITUARY

Mrs. Amelia Hayenga, daughter of Gottfried and Ursula Blocklinger, was born February 4, 1859 in Dubuque, Iowa. Being of Swiss parentage as both of her parents came to America from Switzerland by sailboat and settled at Dubuque in 1844. She was one of a family of 16 children; she attended grade school later graduating from high school in 1878. After teaching in a country school, she taught in the Dubuque Public Schools.

On May 4, 1889 she was united in marriage to Rev. Lubertus H. Hayenga in Dubuque, Iowa, by the Rev. David J. Burrell. They made their home in Stacyville, Iowa, their first pastorate for 4 years. Then they moved to Winona, Minnesota, where they spent 10 years and in 1900 they moved to George, Iowa, where the Rev. Hayenga became the pastor of the Zoar Presbyterian church. Here they lived for 20 years. After 4 years of Synodical Missionary work in the German Synod, the last seven years of their ministry were again spent in Stacyville, Iowa.

In the fall of 1931 they retired, and moved back to George where two years later Rev. Hayenga passed away, since that time Mrs. Hayenga made her home in George. Rev. and Mrs. Hayenga served in several charges, but prior to that time, had served as pastor of the Zoar Presbyterian church a period of twenty years.

This union was blessed with eight children, six sons and two daughters, of whom two sons entered the ministry and one daughter is a missionary to Africa.

Mrs. Hayenga, being the last one left of her family, is survived by eight children: Calvin H., of Phoenix, Arizona; Irvin, Luella, Mrs. Richard Klaassen, and Maurice, all of George, Iowa; Lubertus, of Irvington, New Jersey; Eugene, of St. Ansgar, Iowa; Benjamin, of Jacksonville, Florida; and Winona and Mrs. George Thorne, of Elat Ebolowa, West Africa; and 16 grandchildren besides other relatives and friends.

Out of town people who attended the funeral of Mrs. L.H. Hayenga were Rev. and Mrs. August Cramer and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Greenfield, of Kamrar, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Decker, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gerbick, all of Stacyville, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Syverud, of Inwood, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Ross, Carrie Marschall, and Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Baker, all of Rock Rapids, Iowa.

The following paragraph was written by Mrs. Hayenga, to her children-

“No sorrow, no tears. I’m old and death is the lot of us all.

God bless you all. Strive to live a life for Christ. Honor, wealth,

or anything else avail us nothing in the sight of God.
Remember each other in love as brothers and sisters, till
we meet again.
With much love, God bless you and guide you home. Forgive
my short comings”.
