Obituary: Rock Valley, IA - Gilbert Vande Stroet, 99, died Friday, October 9, 2009 at Hillcrest Health Care Center, Hawarden, IA. Funeral service was held Monday, October 12, at First Reformed Church, Rock Valley with burial is at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley.

Gilbert Vande Stroet was born September 25, 1910 in Ede, the Netherlands, son of Hendrik and Cornelia (Veldhuizen) Vande Stroet. Gilbert came to the USA to the Fairview, SD area where he began working on a farm. He married Nellie Van Egdom on March 5, 1935 near Inwood, IA. Together they farmed near Parker, SD until 1938 when they moved and farmed near Inwood. They retired and moved to Rock Valley in 1972. Nellie died March 6, 1999. Gilbert served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School Superintendent in various churches they attended; served on the Bible council board for 3 years; was president of the Rock Valley Senior Citizens Club; and enjoyed farming, gardening and spending time with family.

Gilbert is survived by 2 sons: Peter (Ruth) Vande Stroet of Rock Valley, IA and Rick (Denise) Vande Stroet of Oskaloosa, IA; 2 daughters: Jeanette (Gerard) Van Beek of Rock Valley, IA and Bernice Hamilton of Sioux Falls, SD; 15 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Don (Lois) Van Egdom of Sioux Center, IA; sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Norman) Ykema of Luverne, MN, Jennie Van Egdom of Hawarden, IA, Zeanna Van Egdom of Rock Valley.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie; daughter, Evelyn Jane Vande Stroet; granddaughter, Natalie Pieschke; brothers, John and Joe Vande Stroet; sisters Bertha DeKoning and Anna Vande Stroet.
