Obituary: Rock Valley, IA - Darlene Kats, 61, died Friday, October 9, 2009 at her home in Rock Valley, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Mass was held Monday, October 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Valley with burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Sheldon, IA.

Darlene was born June 4, 1948 at Primghar, IA, daughter of Orville Donald and Betty (Benson) Gloden. She grew up in the George, IA area where she helped her father with farming and the dairy. Darlene married Donald Schwarz on August 6, 1966 at Sheldon, IA where she raised the family and had a home cleaning business. They later divorced. Darlene married Larry Kats on September 3, 1994 and they lived at Rock Valley where she worked at the RV Golf Club, ERM Metals, and cleaned homes. Darlene enjoyed touring on motorcycles, butterflys, crocheting baby blankets, and being with her grandchildren.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Larry; her father, Orville Don Gloden of George, IA; children, David (Dawn) Schwarz and children Kayla and Justin of Worthington, MN, Dennis Schwarz and daughter Megan of Ashton, IA, Deann (Jason) Rutzen and son Shawn of Sheldon, IA, Donnie (Lisa) Schwarz of Hastings, MN; step-children, Shad (Melissa) Kats and children, Kerrigan, Jerad, and Braeden of Hull, IA, Misti (Jason) Fykstra and children, Dustin and Kyra of Boyden, IA, Molly Kats and Wyatt Junge and children, Alisha and Grace of Sioux City, IA; her sisters, Donna (Bill) Peterson of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Denise (Tim) Kennedy of Round Lake, MN; her brother, Daniel Gloden of Hull, IA.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Gloden; and a niece, Brook Peterson
