Hilko Stubbe was born May 18, 1904 at Drieborg, Groningen, Netherlands, the son of Henry and Wupke (Hisken) Stubbe. In 1916 Hilko moved with his parents to the United States, settling near Ellsworth, Minnesota. Hilko grew up and attended school at Ellsworth. On June 2, 1926, he was united in marriage to Elske Arends at Rock Rapids, Iowa.

After their marriage, Hilko and Elske lived in Rock Rapids for a short time before Hilko began working for the Lyon County Road Maintenance Department. In 1948 Hilko purchased a service station in Little Rock, Iowa which he operated for seven years. From 1955 until he retired in 1966 he worked for Hubbard Implement in Rock Rapids. After his retirement, Hilko enjoyed caring for his lawn and garden.

On February 15m 1985, Hilko’s wife of fifty-eight years, Elske, died. After her death, Hilko continued living in his own home until his unexpected death last Wednesday, September 1, 1993, at the age eighty-nine years, three months, and fourteen days.

Surviving are his three children, Delores Fink of Sibley, Iowa, Beverly; Mrs. Anson Phillips of Waverly, Iowa and Philip Stubbe of Omaha, Nebraska. Also surviving are Hilko’s ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Preceding Hilko in death was his wife Elske, his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services for Hilko Stubbe were held Saturday, September 5, 1993 at Roste Funeral Chapel in Rock Rapids, Iowa with interment at Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids.
