Harold E. Aardema, 80, died Friday, May 22, 2009 at Rock Rapids Health Care Center. Funeral service was held Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at First Reformed Church, Doon. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery, Doon. Porter Funeral Home is assisted the family.

Harold Eugene Aardema was born December 2, 1928, at Doon, IA, the son of Simon and Tracy (Zylstra) Aardema. Harold was stricken with polio at the age of 11. He graduated from Doon Public School in 1947. During his senior year, Harold purchased the Doon newspaper for $150. It was a weekly publication and was a free shopper called the Doon Reminder. In 1964 he went from an advertising shopper to a paid-circulation weekly newspaper he would call the Doon Press. In 1993 after owning and publishing the Press for close to a half century, Harold sold the newspaper to his nephew, Robert Sneller. Robert Sneller died two years later of a heart attack at the age of 28. Robert's wife Bridget took over the Doon Press and Harold continued as news editor until about 2 years ago. Harold moved to Rock Rapids Health Care Center on May 7, 2009.

Harold is survived by his brother, Don Aardema of Doon; sister, Shirley (Louie) Sneller of Doon; aunt, Ann Zylstra Dalman of Maple Lake, MN; sister-in-law, Faye Aardema of Doon; 9 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Stanley Aardema; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Aardema; nephew, Robert Sneller.
