Lyle H. Impecoven, age 89 of Larchwood, Iowa, formerly of Britton, South Dakota died Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital in Canton, South Dakota.

Visitation and Prayer services in Britton, South Dakota were held Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the Price Funeral Home in Britton with burial at the Britton Cemetery in Britton, South Dakota.

Lyle Harold Impecoven was born October 27, 1919 at the family homestead in Newark Township, South Dakota the fifth child of Albert E. and Frances Margaret (Kirchner) Impecoven. He grew up on that farm attending Newark country school and graduating from Kidder High School in 1937. In high school, he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. After high school, he attended a diesel school in Portland Oregon. On December 21, 1946, he married Ella May Hastings at the Methodist Church in Reno, Nevada. They returned to the family homestead where they farmed together for twenty three years.

They were the third generation to farm the land, raising Hereford cattle, hogs, and grain. He was very proud of his registered Herford cattle which he treated more like his babies. At times, he cared for baby calves, pigs, and chicks at the same time by making the trip around the farm yard every couple of hours during the night. Lyle loved the farm and all the work that went with it. Every day was filled with outdoor activities but he especially enjoyed harvest time. His goal was to raise all the feed needed for his livestock. His other interests were welding, blacksmithing and fixing almost anything. He had a welder and all the neighbors knew it. Many tractors pulling equipment in various stages of disrepair came to our place for a little “fixing”. His father was a blacksmith before he started farming and he taught Lyle many of his talents for working with steel.

In 1969, they built a new home in Britton. There Lyle still had time to volunteer at the Britton Senior Citizen’s Center where members packaged parts for a local manufacturer. He also enjoyed building anything with wood and crafted many woodworking projects for his family. He and Ella traveled many places including a trip to Alaska in 1968, and many trips to Yellowstone, the Black Hills, and Washington D.C. where they represented the South Dakota Farmers Union in their lobbying efforts. In 1996, Lyle and Ella moved to Larchwood to be closer to their son. In 2005, they moved to Hiawatha Heights Assisted Living Center in Canton, South Dakota. In March 2007, Lyle became a resident at Fellowship Village Nursing Center at Inwood, Iowa.
