Amy Ruth (Techen) Schmith was born on August 2, 1911, near Hull, Sioux county, Iowa the daughter of Henry and Martha (Schlossin) Techen. Amy grew up on a farm near Hull, where she attended country school. She was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church north of Hull, in April of 1925. On December 5, 1937, Amy Techen was united in marriage to Arthur Schmith at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Hull. They started farming and made their home near Doon, Lyon county, Iowa before moving to Granville, Iowa, then Paullina, Iowa and later settling at George, in Lyon county, Iowa.

Art and Amy farmed all their life and retired to George. Amy was a very active woman, belonging to many organizations. She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Helping Hand, the Senior Citizens Club and the Federated Women's Club of George. Amy started announcing the news from George on the radio as a substitute and later was the full-time news reporter. She also wrote the "Society News" column in the Lyon County News, the local George newspaper. She continued to write this column until she retired at the age of eighty-nine. In September of 2003, she became a resident of the George Good Samaritan Center. This past Friday morning, April 1, 2005, Amy died at the Northwest Iowa Health Center at the age of ninety-three.

She is survived by her five children, Dale Schmith and his wife, Elizabeth of Hull, Iowa; Dean Schmith and his wife, LaDonna of George, Iowa; Kenneth Schmith and his wife, Rosalie of Fredericksburg, Iowa; Lila Hatting of Sibley, Iowa and Wesley Schmith and his wife, Connie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; along with seventeen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur Techen of Hull, Iowa; and a special friend, Lorraine Stueven of George, Iowa.

Amy was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Martha; her husband, Arthur; one great-grandson, Ross Schmith; two brothers, Art and Elmer Techen and two sisters, Esther Schmith and Mathilda Techen.

Funeral services for Amy Schmith were held August 2, 1911 April 1, 2005 at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Hull, Iowa with interment in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery Hull, Iowa.
