EISLAND, Carl – 1869-1942

Carl Eisland, 72, one of the most highly respected farmer citizens of Centennial Township, Lyon county, Iowa, after a long illness was released from his infirmities last Saturday morning, April, 25, 1942 at his home in Centennial Township.

Carl Eisland was an outstanding personality and in his prime was of commanding physique. He was honest, temperate and kindly and had a great many friends. His failing health and long illness has been much regretted by relatives, neighbors and friends. He will be greatly missed by those who had the pleasure of his close acquaintance.

Funeral service was conducted at Our Savior’s Lutheran church by Pastor B. H. J. Habel on Monday, April 27, 1942. Music was by Our Savior’s church choir, Duet by Mrs. Earl Helerson and Violet Tonneson and a vocal solo by Mr. Enoch Lommen.

The pallbearers were the nephews; Felix Olson, Griffith Stensland, Howard Knutson, Jerrold Skeggestad, Lloyd Eisland and Olof Eisland. Interment was in Our Savior’s Lutheran church cemetery in Richland Township, Lyon, county, Iowa

Carl Eisland was born at Lyndal, Norway, May 16, 1869, to Arian and Rebekka Eisland. There he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He came to the United States in 1885, having spend one year at sea as a sailor. He came directly to Lyon county and here worked and established a home.

On September 21, 1893, he was united in marriage to Lena Olson Naglestad. This union was blessed with nine children. He wife and five children preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his loss four children, Herbert and Adolph of Inwood, Lyon county, Iowa, Agnes (Mrs. Olaf Sorenson) of Larchwood, Lyon county, Iowa and Ernest of Detroit, Michigan; ten grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Reinert Roefson of West Orange, new Jersey and Mrs. George Hess of Three Oaks, Michigan and one brother, Harold Eisland of Harrisburg, South Dakota and many other relatives and friends.

Early in manhood he joined Our Savior’s Lutheran church and was active in all church activities as long as his health permitted.

Ten years ago he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered, and as a result had to give up the active part in church and township offices which he had held for years.

He suffered a second stroke last September, since when he has been unable to walk. On the 25th day of April, 1942, he passed away at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 9 days.
