Funeral services for William Stap, 71, were held September 15, 1992 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, May City, Iowa, with interment in Harrison Township Cemetery.

He died September 12, 1992 at the hospital in Sibley, Osceola county, Iowa.

Mr. Stap was born February 4, 1921, in George, Lyon county, Iowa. While he was growing up, his parents moved from George to Chandler and Iona, Minnesota, and then to Hull, Matlock and May City, Iowa. He attended school in Iowa and Minnesota. He served in the United States Army for eight months before World War II and entered service again August 16, 1944. He was a tank driver in Company A, 712th Tank Battalion under General George Patton. He was a private first class and served overseas from February 10, 1945 until April 30, 1946 in the Rhineland and Central Europe.

On December 28, 1947, he married Phyllis Boernsen at May City. They farmed in the May City area and he worked as a welder for McQuay in Spirit Lake, Iowa for 19 years, retired in 1986.

He was a member of American Legion at Hartley, Iowa and the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Spirit Lake.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Bill of Kalispell, Montana; two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Linda) Wingate of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Mrs. Gary (Linda) Visintainer of Craig, Colorado; four grandchildren and one sister, Sophie Van Houten of Alvord, Iowa
