VAN BRIESEN, DANIELS, VAN HORN, SHARRETT

Quite a number of relatives and friends attended the funeral service for Ben Van Briesen held at Lynd, Minnesota on May 28, 1950. Mr. Van Briesen was a former resident of this community (George, Lyon County, Iowa). He passed away on May 26.

Ben Van Briesen, son of Fred Van Briesen and Hattie Daniels Van Briesen was born at Visguard, Emden, Germany, on June 29, 1967. He passed away from this life on Mary 26, 1950, at the Tyler, Minnesota hospital, having reached the age of 82 yrs, 10 mnths and 3 days.

On January 27, 1892, at Eilsum, Germany he was united in marriage to Minnie Van Horn. A few days later they left for their new home in America. They arrive in George on March 1 of that year. A year later they went to Williams, Iowa, where Mr. Van Briesen was employed on the railroad for some time. They moved back to George, Iowa where they started farming in 1903 for some years. They then moved to a farm south of Lynd, Minnesota, where they farmed for 36 years.

Due to poor health they retired and moved to Lynd, where they lived for two years. Due to failing health of Mrs. Van Briesen, they moved to the home of the daughter (Hattie) Mrs. G. Sharrett.

Mrs. Van Briesen passed away on January 3, 1943. He made his home with the Sharrett family until May of 1945, when he came to live with his son Fred, of Russ, Minnesota. Here he made his home until he passed away.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Briesen: Hattie, Mrs. G. Sharrett, now deceased; Tena, Mrs. Frank Houwman of Atkin, Minnesota; Fred, of Russell, Minnesota; Anna, Mrs. Arnold Sharrott of Tyler, Minnesota; Frieda, Mrs. Martin Heftie of Balaton, Minnesota.

In 1942 Mr. and Mrs. Van Briesen observed their Golden Wedding anniversary.

While in Iowa, they associated with the Presbyterian church. At Lynd, in 1913 united with the Methodist church, of which he was still a member. In Russell, he attended the Presbyterian church.

Mr. Van Briesen was one of eight children, of whom there remain to mourn his death five brothers: George, of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Jake, of Cherokee, Iowa; Leonard, Simen and Harry, all of George; a sister Frieda and a brother Fred preceded him death.

Besides his children and brothers he is survived by 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews besides many relatives and friends and one great-granddaughter passed away at the age of one year.
