This community (George, Lyon county, Iowa) lost another long time resident on (June 24, 1950) in the sudden death of Dick Smith, Sr., who passed away at his home in George. Mr. Smith had been in poor health for some time.

Funeral services were held from the Smith home and from Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George on June 28, 1950.

Dick E. Smith, son of Euna and Hattie Smith, was born at Eldora, Hardin county, Iowa August 11, 1868. He received his early education in the public schools of Iowa. As a young man he came to northwest Iowa, where he has lived since, except for a few years in Minnesota.

On December 12, 1894, he was married to Anna Geerdes, who preceded him in death in December, 1949.

Mr. Smith’s life work was farming, he was faithful and diligent in his occupation. He farmed first near Ashton, Iowa. Them he moved to Minnesota. In 1908 he returned to George, where he followed his occupation until 1937, when he retired from active work and lived in George.

He joined the Lyon County First Presbyterian Church southeast of George, and later transferred his membership to the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in town where he was a member at the time of his death.

He always enjoyed good health. During the last few years, his health began to fail. He passed away at his him in George, Iowa on June 24, 1950, having reached the age of 81 yrs and 11 months.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith were privileged to observe their 55th wedding anniversary December 12, 1949.

He leaves a family of 11 children to mourn his death: Hattie, Mrs. Ernest Groan, Hartley, Iowa; Bertha, Mrs. Martin Hansen, Los Angeles, California; Earnest Smith, Sioux City, Iowa; Else, Mrs. Frank Jackson. Peoria, Illinois; Ralph Smith, George, Iowa; Dick Smith, Worthington, Minnesota; Allis, Mrs. Thole Isebrands, George, Iowa; Fritz Smith, George, Iowa; Kathryn, Mrs. Harold Muselman, Morton, Illinois; and Tressa, Mrs. Ray Smith, George, Iowa.

His wife and one son preceded him in death. He also leaves 25 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a large number of relatives, friends and acquaintances.
